While the economy and the dollar plummet...
One thing seems to be on the upswing - American support for the war.
Apparently, 53 percent of Americans now believe “the U.S. will ultimately succeed in achieving its goals” in Iraq. That figure is up from 42 percent in September 2007.
It seems this is bad news for the democrats' cause for "pullin' out" of Iraq. But I have to ask, what are our goals in this war? I forget sometimes. It's been five years, you know. I understand we're trying to ensure the peace, safety, and well-being of Americans at home and abroad as well as to achieve the political end of sectarian reconciliation among the Iraqis. Certainly good things. But is there anything else I'm missing? Is the latter goal even feasible?
The percentage of those who believe the war in Iraq is going “very well” or “fairly well” is also up, from 30 percent in February 2007 to 48 percent today.
Half of self-identified independents polled now believe the United States should “keep troops in Iraq until the situation has stabilized,”
This upsurge on the surge in Iraq may make for a new take on things political here at home. Despite my concerns and reservations regarding our goals in Iraq, I will always support our troops.
